Our local Associated Railroaders of Kingston group (ARK) has gotten on board the idea of representing the Hanley Spur in HO scale. (This is different from getting on board the ARK!)
Our module group had its second meeting tonight. We've decided on scale. Tonight we talked about era range, module location selection, module construction standards, module layout format and protection, where and when to exhibit, DCC control setup, and all this before even building a single module.
The appearance of a map showing nearly all-time trackage down the Hanley Spur was engrossing and full of information, some of it heretofore unknown.
The discussions were somewhat circular, and didn't progress necessarily two-by-two in an orderly fashion. But we made progress, and we're discovering that the more we know about this interesting homegrown operation, the more we need to know. A flood of discussion and a deluge of ideas! Creative energy cascaded around the room!
I for one can't wait to see the waterfront Richardson elevator, Canadian Locomotive Co., River Street bridge and diamond, and the durable Bailey Broom Factory in scale. These module locations have been selected so far.
Some members won't necessarily build a module, but will assist in scenery, control, wiring, construction and logistics. Wouldn't it be neat to use the finished layout as a means of preserving Kingston history, outreach beyond our own group, civic exhibits, and education for all?
In the meantime, I'll continue dumping data, warehousing ideas and posting pictures to this blog. I'll also continue work on my own Hanley Spur basement layout. If not going up the ramp to the ARK yet, at least we're ramping up!
