2026 Heritage Fair - The Kids are Alright - Again!

For a fortuitous third year, I was honoured to be a judge at the Kings Town School Heritage Fair this afternoon. The only thing I have in common with Seal or Tom Brady is that I sometimes show up at events with a model on my arm! In this case, a model of the very building hosting us. Bringing coals to Newcastle, perhaps? I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get a model/proto photo as I had with the Bailey Broom Factor last August. Perhaps the school staff would be interested. At the very least, it would be an icebreaker in the judges' room!

The presentations I heard this year were again a nice variety: Vikings in Canada, the Frank Slide, Hockey's Importance to Canada, Expo 67, the Halifax explosion, Laura Secord, The Tragically Hip and the Cold War. Saving the best til first, I bee-lined to Oliver's presentation on 66 Rideau Street and its history as a school - this school! Oliver even had a hand-made replica with actual stone and the now-gone bell tower and knew his topic as well as the other bright, polite, motivated students in Grades 5, 7 and 8!

This year's team of 10 judges, including the inimitable Marc Shaw, made short work of the 30 entries, with each student getting three chances to present and then receive written feedback. Teachers Amy and Paige welcomed us before giving us a tour of the three display rooms before the students returned from lunch. Each room had a theme: science, Canada's place in the world, and well-known Canadian icons. Amy and Paige and fed us with cookies and lemonade, bringing students in at wrap-up time to present each judge with a hand-written card of appreciation.

Oh, and the model I brought? It was indeed a conversation-starter on the judges' table, making its way to the office and being duly photographed by staff.
